Live Feed Puppy Cam!!

Live TV by Ustream

I'm a little late to the party on this one but I want you to tune in before it's too late. It all started 5 weeks ago when a San Francisco couple decided to put a live feed of their litter of six Shiba Inu puppies on a new website called Ustream.tv. An astounding 4 million people have tuned in to watch the cuteness unfold on a daily basis. The puppies have also been featured on CNN, MSNBC and the Today Show.

They are all spoken for so don't get excited about adopting one. You can continue to tune in until it's time for them to go to their new homes.

A Dog as Mayor????

We have another historical moment in American history!! I was watching CBS Sunday Morning and saw the funniest story about a little town named Rabbit Hash in Kentucky that actually voted a dog as their mayor! That's it. I'm moving to Rabbit Hash! I LOVE these people!!!

Ten dogs, one cat, one opossum, one jackass, and one human being vied for the ultimate position of political power in this small Ohio River community in Boone County, Kentucky. It was a dog-eat-dog race. Lucy Lou, picture above, won the race.

Here is their website where you can learn all about them and see the results of the race:

R.I.P. Gus

GULFPORT, Fla. – A one-eyed, three-legged dog that won the title of world's ugliest pooch this summer has died. The St. Petersburg Times in Florida reports that Gus, a Chinese crested dog, had cancer. He was 9. Gus was rescued from a bad home and went on to win the annual World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in northern California.

Gus came from humble origins. According to the fair, his adopted family in Gulfport, Fla., rescued him after learning he was being kept in a crate inside someone's garage.

He had one leg amputated because of a skin tumor and lost an eye in a cat fight.

Gus' owner had said the prize money from the contest would be put toward the dog's radiation treatment.

Dog Night at The Pumpkin Patch

We started celebrating Halloween 2008 a little early this year. Our local pumpkin patch had a really fun dog night. Edie had a blast!! She wore her pumpkin costume. There were other dogs to play with, a trainer to give advice, a pet psychic and even the pupperazzi who took this cute picture. Everyone got a doggie goody bag on the way out.

Here's Edie playing with another dog who was a workman with his toolbelt.

Here's a little video Edie's reading with the pyschic, or animal communicator, as she preferred to be called.

We have some fun stuff and events planned for this year including our pumpkin carving night while we watch the classic "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" plus a fun night out with all the dogs at the local pumpkin patch.

Do you have your pets costume picked out? If not, here's some links to places where you can buy some great costumes.

My friend, Dickse, has two dogs and three cats. She sent in this great home movie that she shot of Willard, her Frenchie and Wagu, her Main Coon cat. I think I see Gellar, her other Frenchie, in there too! This is such an adorable video and it shows that cats and dogs really can get along!!!

Will the Real Beverly Hills Chihuahua Please Stand Up

Yes, I'm still bitter that my Little Edie was not chosen to star in the blockbuster movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Unlike the 'fake' dogs in the movie she actually LIVES in Beverly Hills. She walks the streets and parks of Beverly Hills. She struts down Rodeo Dr. and visits all of her designer store friends. She hangs out at her mommy's office in Beverly Hills. Tourists take her picture. They film her. She sits, lays down and claps her paws on demand. She even rides in style in her plush car seat complete with pink cell phone (1-555-WOOF).

Happy Anniversary!!!!

One year ago this week I brought Little Edie home. I can't believe she has been with me an entire year. She is the best little dog. She makes me laugh every day. Her little personality has blossomed. She loves her brother Jake, the cat. She loves her friends, Percy, Agnes, Peete & Ginger. She loves her clothes and now even has her own closet! She can sit, lay down, beg and stay on command. And she inspired this blog which has just marked a milestone of its own with over 3,000 hits from all over the world!!! What a year it has been!!

I put together this little video of some of my favorite pictures of her. I love you Little Edie!!!

RIP Baby Meechie

I found myself in a very unusual situation on Tuesday. I was in a vacant house (working) and as I was about to open the door and go out to the backyard I noticed something moving in the middle of the grass. I thought it was a rat and stopped for a moment to observe further. It was squirming. It was a grey color. 'Wait a minute' I thought. That's not a rat. That's a kitten. As I hurriedly opened the door I immediately heard the desperate cries. Here was this little tiny, clearly newborn kitten, in the middle of the backyard crying out for help.

How did it get there? Where could it have come from? It couldn't walk so it didn't bring itself there. I looked all around to see if there was a den somewhere, a mother, other kittens.......nothing. I realized that either the mother didn't want it and brought it there from a neighboring house or maybe some kids decided to play a really dumb trick.

I was so busy that day and the last thing I had time for was to help this poor kitten. For a moment I actually thought "just turn around and walk away and pretend you didn't see it". Then I caught myself. I thought of Audrey, of Jake and of Little Edie. There was NO way I could do that.

I went inside and found a little box, a couple of towels and a plastic baggie. I carefully picked up the kitten, which fit in the palm of my hand, inspected a little - it looked like a boy and still seemed to have the umbilical cord attached. I carefully laid him in the box and wrapped the towel over him. I decided to go to a local rescue and drop it off there. I was sure they would take it in. I made the trip over with the kitten in the box on my passenger seat crying and squirming. The cry was hearty so I thought his chances were good.

Upon arrival the girl there told me they didn't have anyone available who would be able to bottle feed this kitten every two hours to keep it alive. I asked if they had any cats with a little of kittens.....just add one more...... No she said. She pulled out her binder with all her resources and started calling around. "It's kitten season" she said. "It's going to be really hard to find someone".

I was already late for my next appointment and starting to realize this easy solution was not going to be so easy. They wouldn't even let me leave the kitten there. She told me I would have to take it and maybe I should just take it to a shelter but they would most certainly put it down. What??? No way. I was already invested in this and there was no way I was going to hand this kitten over, who was struggling for life, and say "here, go ahead, just kill it."

In a desperate attempt I called Aunt Wanda and explained the situation. She jumped and said her mom could take the kitten in and bottle feed it. She had been wanting a cat so maybe this was meant to be. I raced home with the kitten. The girl at the rescue instructed me to put a heating pad in the box right away because the body temperature was falling and the kitten was really cold. I don't have a heating pad so I put the towel in the dryer and heated up some water which I put in a sturdy zip-lock bag. I but the warmed water in the bottom of the box and wrapped the kitten in the warmed towel. Wanda came and quickly took him and ran to Petco to buy formula.

Phew. Off I went to continue with my day the whole time wondering "why did this happen to me today"?

Wanda called and told me she was sitting in the car at Petco feeding the kitten. 'Ok.....we're off to a good start.' I thought. We all wanted to save this kitten. I told her to keep me updated.

About three hours later Wanda called and told me the kitten didn't make it. She had gotten him home and everyone was there routing for him, fighting over him and they decided to name him Meechi (after me). He ate just a little bit but no more. He died quietly in his sleep wrapped up warmly in a box.

I really don't know he ended up in the backyard of this house or why I found him that day. I'm just happy that we all did what we did. He lived a very short little life but he died surrounded by love instead of laying abandoned on cold, wet grass in the middle of a backyard. We all did our very best to save him and I'm happy for that.

Rest in peace Baby Meechie.......

(This photo is not of baby Meechie. I found it online and it looks very similar to him in color and in size. It is just a representation for this story.)

The Dog Days of Summer

Everyone knows that the “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. Webster defines “dog days” as:

1 : the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere

2 : a period of stagnation or inactivity

But where does the term come from? Why do we call the hot, sultry days of summer “dog days?”In ancient times, when the night sky was unobscured by artificial lights and smog, different groups of peoples in different parts of the world drew images in the sky by “connecting the dots” of stars. The images drawn were dependent upon the culture: The Chinese saw different images than the Native Americans, who saw different pictures than the Europeans. These star pictures are now called constellations, and the constellations that are now mapped out in the sky come from our European ancestors.

They saw images of bears, (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor), twins, (Gemini), a bull, (Taurus), and others, including dogs, (Canis Major and Canis Minor).

The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that the ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. Look for it in the southern sky (viewed from northern latitudes) during January.

In the summer, however, Sirius, the “dog star,” rises and sets with the sun. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun, and the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They named this period of time, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, “dog days” after the dog star.

The conjunction of Sirius with the sun varies somewhat with latitude. And the “precession of the equinoxes” (a gradual drifting of the constellations over time) means that the constellations today are not in exactly the same place in the sky as they were in ancient Rome. Today, dog days occur during the period between July 3 and August 11. Although it is certainly the warmest period of the summer, the heat is not due to the added radiation from a far-away star, regardless of its brightness. No, the heat of summer is a direct result of the earth's tilt.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina

A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house. The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires, told CNN. The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby some 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said. "She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said. "The doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died." "The dog is a hero to us."

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, told CNN that police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby who doctors say was only a few hours old.

Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said. The next morning, the child's mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities the 8 pound, 13 ounce infant is hers, Melia said. The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.

The child has been transferred to a children's hospital in La Plata, 37 miles from Buenos Aires.

Sacred Sunday Morning

I have a rule. If I can help it. I don't do anything before noon on Sunday. No housework, no regular work, no nothing. My favorite way to start the day is to make a good pot of coffee, serve myself a lovely breakfast and put the whole thing on a fancy tray. Just like getting room service in a great hotel!! Then I take the whole thing outside on the patio and I enjoy my leisurely breakfast and coffee along with my Sunday paper.

Well, I'm not the only one who enjoys this routine. This past Sunday I stepped away for a moment and Little Edie took over my spot. She brought her toy too (see the brown rabbit on the right?). And so what if she jumps all over the paper, tries to eat my breakfast and licks out of my coffee cup? Now we have Sacred Sunday Morning together. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Funny E-Mail of the Day....

I got this from Frank's Nana B and it made me laugh.....

Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female Poodle. The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time.

The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return.Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, 'The first one who can use the words 'liver' and 'cheese' together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me.'

The sturdy, muscular black Lab speaks up quickly and says, 'I love liver and cheese.''Oh, how childish,' said the Poodle. 'That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever.'

She turns to the tall, shiny Golden Retriever and says, 'How well can you do?''Um. I HATE liver and cheese,' blurts the Golden Retriever.'My, my,' said the Poodle. 'I guess it's hopeless. That's just as dumb as the Lab's sentence.'

She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, 'How about you, little guy?'The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell Chihuahua. He gives her a smile, a sly wink, turns to the Golden Retriever, and the Lab and says:

OK this is really good........
'Liver alone. Cheese mine.'

Little Edie's First Fourth of July...

Little Edie and I were invited to spend the evening of the fourth at Polly's parents' house. Off we went with Percy and Agnes in tow. Polly's parents have two Westies, Harry and Claudette. Lisa was also there with her sweet lab mix, Coco. So.....did you do the math? That's SIX dogs!! All females except for Harry. And all little dogs except for Coco. Edie was trying to play with Coco all night. Harry and Claudette just followed Edie around (I think Harry is in love). Agnes just ran around the whole night getting her fun on where she could and Percy.....perched on her pillow watching it all from afar.....

Here's a little video of the fun....complete with fireworks!

An Estimated 17 million U.S. Dogs Are Overweight

Not my Little Edie of course. At 10 pounds she's right on for her breed. However, millions of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, according to animal experts.

Up to 40 percent, or 17 million dogs, are carrying excess weight which could cause future health problems, but many of their owners are not even aware of it.

"What we've found in talking with dog owners is that it's difficult for them to see the reality that their own pet may be overweight or obese, instead of just chubby or fluffy," said Lisa Peterson of the American Kennel Club Humane Fund.

"Studies are indicating that there are approximately 17 million dogs out there that may be overweight or obese. It is a troubling statistic that dogs are gaining weight, just as humans are," she added in an interview.

While an extra 10 pounds on a man or woman can be a bit uncomfortable and mean loosening the belt or a bigger dress size, for a normal 40-pound dog the excess could put it 25 percent over its ideal weight.

To help dog owners identify their overweight canines, the AKC is urging owners to check their dog's weight through the Web site www.stopcanineobesity.com. Up to 4,000 veterinarians across the United States are participating in the program to raise awareness of the problem, according to Peterson.

"About 30 percent of dog owners may not even know their dogs are overweight so this is a great way to start a conversation about their dog's weight," she said. The main cause of obesity in dogs, as in humans, is overeating and insufficient exercise.

Neutering, hormonal disorders and slow metabolism can also cause dogs to pile on the pounds. Canine middle-age spread usually occurs by about the age of five or six years old.

Certain breeds including Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Collies, Shelties, Basset Hounds, Dachshunds, Labradors and Golden Retrievers are prone to excess weight. Like humans, overweight dogs are more at risk of developing heart or respiratory disease, joint problems, arthritis and diabetes.

And The Winner Is.....

A Florida dog named Gus captured the hearts and votes of judges tonight at the 20th Annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma. Rescued from a bad home and now suffering from skin cancer, Gus’ story was compelling, but he won based on his looks. A Chinese-Crested, he has no hair, only three legs (one amputated because of the skin tumor) and is missing an eye lost to a tomcat in a cat fight. Despite his trials, he is well loved by mother and daughter owners Jeanenne and Janey Teed.

Twelve dogs vied for the title of the World’s Ugliest Dog. Entrants came from Florida to New Jersey to Arizona to Petaluma. The contest has four levels of competition. Winners are chosen from both the Pedigree class and the Mutt class. Those winners then compete against each other to become the 2008 Ugly Dog winner Gus won the pedigree class and went up against Reggie who had just won the Mutt Class.

Winning that competition gave Gus the 2008 title, but then he had to meet the Ring of Champions, which included winners from past years’ contests. That’s where Gus met former champions Elwood (the 2007 winner), Archie (the 2006 winner) and Rascal (the 2002 winner). Gus takes home two trophies and $1,600 in prize money. In the past few years, winners have been dogs that have been abandoned or neglected before being adopted by people who love dogs and usually have several dogs whom they have rescued.

Gus was adopted by Jeanenne and her 16-year-old daughter Janey through word of mouth after they discovered he was being kept in a crate in the garage of someone’s home. Said Jeanenne, “I’m just in shock. We came so far and are so happy that we can put the winnings towards Gus’ radiation treatment. We’re just thrilled.”

Animal Planet shot the contest for a show to be released next October. Animal Planet’s host Beth Ostrosky joined emcee Brent Farris of KZST radio to interview the dogs, their owners, and award the trophies to a standing room only participatory audience.. This is one of the most popular events at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.

Summer is Here....

In case you couldn't judge by the weather in LA, summer has arrived! Summer solstice occurred Friday night making Saturday the first day of summer. I did a little research on what solstice is all about.....

Solstices occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is most oriented toward or away from the Sun, causing the Sun to reach its northernmost and southernmost extremes. The name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, its apparent movement north or south comes to a standstill.

The term solstice can also be used in a wider sense, as the date (day) that such a passage happens. The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with the seasons. In some languages they are considered to start or separate the seasons; in others they are considered to be centre points (in English, in the Northern hemisphere, for example, the period around the June solstice is known as midsummer, and Midsummer's Day is 24 June, about three days after the solstice itself).

Similarly 25 December is the start of the Christmas celebration, which was a Pagan festival in pre-Christian times, and is the day the sun begins to return back to the northern hemisphere.

If you want more info go here. Otherwise, grab a cool drink and enjoy this hot summer day!!!

Frosty The Snowman.....

I know it's one of the hottest days of the year so I thought I'd give you something cool to think about. A couple of Christmas' ago Joe bought Frank a Frosty the Snowman doll that lights up, shakes and sings. He thought Frank would love it but knew he would want to rip the thing to shreds like he did with all his stuffed animals. Nope. Not this stuffed animal. Frank was scared of it. The minute it went on he would turn around and walk away with his head down.

Frosty was put away and forgotten until he was found during the move. We decided to try it on Peete and lo and behold.....the complete opposite reaction. Peete is fascinated with Frosty. It's hours of fun for him. The other day Joe said he turned it on by himself (you have to squeeze Frosty's foot to get him going). Here's a little video of Peete and Frosty......

(Not So) Rich Bitch....

Trouble, the dog that got $12 million in Leona Helmsley's will, have to live off $2 million for the rest of her days. Ruff life! The New York Post reports that a New York judge reduced the dog's inheritance and gave $10 million to charity – and worked out a deal to give her grandkids $6 million each. When Leona died last August, she left the pair out of her will, but left Trouble the dog a big chunk of change.

A Very Sad Story To Report.....

A street-sweeping truck roaring down a Bronx street sucked up a dog and killed her as her owner held the leash. Ginger, center, a Boston terrier, was killed by a street-sweeping truck in the Bronx on Thursday.

Robert Machin said he had just finished walking his two Boston terriers and was about to put them into his car when the truck appeared Thursday morning. The retired transit worker said he was suddenly whipped around and saw one of the dogs, Ginger, being swallowed by the sweeper's round bristles.

"I went berserk at that moment because I couldn't believe what had occurred," he said Saturday.

Machin said he yelled at the driver to stop, but the truck kept going. He and friends chased the truck for 2 ½ blocks before catching up with it. Ginger's slight body was later pulled from the sweeper. The city Department of Sanitation called the death "a rare and unfortunate accident."
A heartbroken Machin questioned whether the driver was observing proper procedures, saying the truck seemed to barreling through the street at an unsafe speed.

The heartbroken Machin, 57, choked up as he described losing Ginger. With his children grown, he said, "These two dogs, they're my life."

They Can't BEAR To Be Apart.....

As far as lifelong friendships go, Muschi thinks her large and loveable friend Maeuschen is the cat's pyjamas. The feline, which struck up the unlikely friendship with the 40-year-old Asian bear eight years ago, now can't bear to be apart from her friend. In fact, the pair are so close that zookeepers at Berlin Zoo had to reunite them after Muschi, or 'pussy' in German, pined for Maeuschen - 'little mouse' - after they were separated.

The pair were split up last October when the bear was locked in a cage while her living space was enlarged. The distraught cat soon caught the attention of zoo keepers after she remained sitting outside the bear's cage pining for her friend. This week, keepers took the unusual step of allowing the feline into the cage with her shaggy-haired pal.

'They greeted each other and had a cuddle and now they're happy,' said Heiner Kloes, a member of the zoo's management board. 'The cat has a real fan club, mostly among our older, regular visitors.' But where Muschi, a normal black domestic cat, came from remains a mystery. 'She appeared from nowhere in 2000 and we decided to leave them together because they got on so well,' Mr Kloes said.

'They sunbathed together and shared meals of raw meat, dead mice, fruit and bread.' The enlarged enclosure will reopen in the spring.

The Unicorn of Tuscany

A roe deer with a single horn in the middle of its head has found fame as the "Unicorn" of Tuscany. The 10-month-old deer was born in captivity at the Centre of Natural Sciences, a nature reserve near Prato.

While single-horned deers have been spotted before, this particular buck has a uniquely central horn, thought to be the result of a genetic flaw."This is a demonstration that the fabled unicorn, which we all know from icons and legends, probably was not just a fantasy."It was probably an animal like this one, with a natural anomaly," said Gilberto Tozzi, the director of the centre.Mr Tozzi added that the twin of the buck has two horns. The mother of the two deer was brought to the park several years ago after being hit by a car in the Apennine mountains.

The mythical unicorn was thought to have healing powers and was generally depicted as a horse with the cloven hooves of a goat or deer. The earliest mention of the beast was by the Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BC.In one notebook, Leonardo Da Vinci suggested unicorns could be captured using a virgin as bait.

"For the love it bears to fair maidens [the unicorn] forgets its ferocity and wildness and laying aside all fear it will go to a seated damsel and sleep in her lap, and thus the hunters take it," he wrote. Mr Tozzi said the Tuscan unicorn was also remarkably elusive. "Our deer might be aware that he is a little different. "He doesn't let himself be seen very often" he said. He advised visitors to "arm themselves with binoculars and a lot of patience."

Last year, a hunter in Elma, New York, photographed a stag with a third horn protruding from the front of its head.

In Memory of Audrey

Today marks the one year anniversary of Audrey's passing. I can't believe it has been an entire year. I still miss her so much and I think about her every single day......

The Rainb
ow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
